Children with a passion for history will soon have the opportunity to explore the past through a new Young Historians Workshop at Amesbury History Centre.
Open to young people aged 8 to 16, the workshop will run once a month, offering engaging two-hour sessions designed to bring history to life. Sessions will take place on either a Saturday or Sunday, with dates varying throughout the year and listed on the Amesbury History Centre calendar via the centre's website.
Each session costs £4 per child. Organisers are keen to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation and encourage families who may need assistance to contact the History Centre directly at admin@amesburyhistorycentre.co.uk.
The workshops will accommodate up to 24 children per session and will always be supervised by three volunteer adult leaders. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with no requirement for children to attend every month.
Organisers say the flexible booking system allows both local children and those visiting relatives in the Amesbury area to take part whenever they are available. The workshop will not run during August.
Throughout the year, participants will explore a wide range of historical topics, including timelines, Kings and Queens, World War One, archaeology, and seasonal historical celebrations. Children will have the chance to delve into the fascinating story of the Plantagenet monarchs and learn about the mystery surrounding Queen Eleanor of Provence, who spent her final years at Amesbury Abbey.
There may also be opportunities to visit live archaeological digs when excavations return to Amesbury, giving young historians a unique hands-on experience of discovering the past.
Parents and guardians booking places will be asked to provide relevant personal information, including emergency contact details, medical information, additional support needs, and permissions relating to photography, filming and future communications. Full details on how this information is used are available through the Amesbury History Centre Privacy Statement, which can be requested by emailing admin@amesburyhistorycentre.co.uk.
