A replacement footbridge could be built over the A36 in Salisbury after strong opposition to plans to demolish the existing crossing.

Salisbury City Councillor Sharon Rideout welcomed the proposal and urged local people to support it.
"The bridge connects communities across the city and is an important route for many residents," she said.
Residents have also spoken out in favour of retaining a crossing at the location.
Michelle Williams, who has used the bridge for decades, said she was relieved to hear a replacement was being considered.
"I went to school over the bridge and now I still use it regularly to walk into town. It's important for encouraging people to leave the car at home and travel on foot," she said.
Another resident, Helen, who has lived in Salisbury for 25 years, said the bridge was used daily by local people.
"We cross it at least twice a day. Having to take a lengthy detour would make a huge difference to many residents," she said.
She also raised concerns that without a bridge some pedestrians, particularly younger people, may attempt to cross the busy A36 directly.
National Highways route manager Chris Hilldrup said the organisation is monitoring usage of the bridge to help determine whether a replacement is required.
He confirmed that plans are already in place to build an upgraded footbridge on nearby Victoria Road and said discussions were continuing regarding the future of the Wyndham Road crossing.
"We are considering all options and working with the local community to identify the safest solution," he said.
