The Talented Mr Ripley Comes to Salisbury Playhouse in 2026
25 March 2026 | Wiltshire Creative
The critically acclaimed stage adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley is set to captivate audiences at Salisbury Playhouse this spring, marking the final stop of its hugely successful UK and international tour ahead of a highly anticipated West End run.
Following sold-out performances and widespread critical praise throughout 2025, this gripping production—adapted and directed by Mark Leipacher—has been hailed as a “thrilling adaptation” by The Stage and “an intriguing take on one of the greatest and most disturbing crime novels ever written” by The Scotsman.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings Highsmith’s Classic to Life
Leading the cast is Ed McVey (The Crown) as the enigmatic Tom Ripley, alongside Maisie Smith (EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing) as Marge Sherwood, and Bruce Herbelin-Earle as Dickie Greenleaf.
They are joined by a talented ensemble including Christopher Bianchi, Cary Crankson, Leda, Jason Eddy, Lachlan McCall, Hollie Sullivan, and Aldous Ciokajlo-Squire.
Critics have praised the performances, with WhatsOnStage calling McVey “the perfect fit as the ruthless Ripley” and Reviews Hub describing Smith’s performance as “towering” in a “superb piece of theatre.”
A Timeless Psychological Thriller
Based on the iconic novel by Patricia Highsmith, The Talented Mr Ripley remains one of the most compelling psychological thrillers of all time. The story famously inspired the 1999 film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as the recent Netflix adaptation featuring Andrew Scott.
Set against the glamorous backdrop of 1950s Italy, the story follows Tom Ripley—a struggling young man whose life changes when he is sent abroad to retrieve a wealthy man’s son. What begins as an opportunity quickly spirals into obsession, deception, and ultimately, murder.
“I never wanted to murder anyone. It was necessary.”
With razor-sharp dialogue and simmering tension, this electrifying adaptation explores identity, ambition, and the dangerous allure of reinvention.
