The Secret Story of Salisbury’s Spitfires

The roar of the Supermarine Spitfire is one of the most recognisable sounds in British history. Sleek, fast and deadly in the skies, the Spitfire became a symbol of courage during the Second World War.

But what many people in Wiltshire still do not realise is that Salisbury played a crucial role in building the aircraft that helped defend Britain during its darkest days.

Salisbury’s Hidden Wartime Mission

In 1940, German bombing raids devastated the main Supermarine aircraft factories in Southampton. Britain urgently needed to keep Spitfire production alive. The answer was a daring secret operation - moving manufacturing into smaller hidden sites across southern England. Salisbury became one of the most important centres in that mission.

Factories were quietly established in garages, workshops, bus depots and industrial buildings around the city. Parts were made in places that appeared completely ordinary from the outside. Some components were even produced in garden sheds and home workshops by local residents.

The secrecy was essential. If the Luftwaffe discovered the locations, Salisbury could have become a major bombing target.

The People Behind the Planes

Much of the work was carried out by local women and teenagers who had never worked in engineering before the war. They were rapidly trained to build aircraft parts with astonishing precision.

These workers became part of an extraordinary hidden workforce. Entire sections of Spitfires were constructed across the city before being transported to nearby airfields for final assembly.

Historians estimate that more than 2,000 Spitfires were produced through Salisbury’s dispersed factory network - over 10 per cent of all Spitfires ever built.

Without the efforts of these workers, Britain’s air defence during the Battle of Britain and later operations may have looked very different.

High Post and Chattis Hill

Once the individual parts were completed, they were taken to assembly sites at High Post and Chattis Hill, where the aircraft were built, tested and flown.

Completed Spitfires would then head to RAF squadrons across the country, joining the fight against Nazi Germany.

At the time, very few local residents knew the scale of what was happening around them.

The Secret Stayed Hidden for Decades

For many years after the war, the Salisbury Spitfire story remained largely forgotten. Much of the work had been carried out under wartime secrecy rules, and many workers rarely spoke about their experiences.

Public awareness only grew significantly after the release of the documentary film The Secret Spitfires in 2016, which highlighted Salisbury’s remarkable contribution to the war effort.

Today, memorials and exhibitions help preserve that history for future generations.

Remembering the Legacy

A major memorial dedicated to Salisbury’s “Secret Spitfires” was unveiled in 2021, honouring the thousands of local people who helped build the iconic aircraft in secret. The memorial includes a full-sized Spitfire replica and stands near the site of one of the wartime factories.

Meanwhile, aviation history continues to attract visitors to the area through attractions such as the Old Sarum Airfield and the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, where visitors can explore Britain’s rich aviation heritage.

A City That Helped Save Britain

Salisbury is famous for its cathedral, medieval streets and historic charm - but hidden beneath that history is another story of courage, ingenuity and determination.

The Spitfire may have flown in the skies above Britain, but many of those legendary aircraft began life quietly and secretly in workshops scattered across Salisbury.

And more than 80 years later, the city’s contribution to one of Britain’s greatest wartime achievements still deserves to be remembered.
