Whether you are a lifelong resident or a newcomer to South Wiltshire, there is plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
Celebrating Our Heritage: Charter Sunday 2026This February marks a significant milestone for our city. On the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th February, Salisbury celebrates Charter Sunday, marking 799 years since King Henry III granted the Royal Charter that established New Sarum. This historic event is not just a look back at our past but a celebration of the enduring traditions that define us today, such as our beloved Charter Market. The weekend festivities include a mini funfair in Guildhall Square and a special additional market on Sunday. One of the highlights is the civic procession on Sunday morning, where the Mayor and City Councillors walk from the Guildhall to St Thomas’ Church for the Annual Charter Service. It is a wonderful opportunity for families to witness the pageantry of our city and enjoy the lively atmosphere in the Market Place.
The Return of Salisbury Street SellersOne of the most anticipated returns to the city’s event calendar is the Salisbury Street Sellers markets. These themed events transform the Market Place into a hub of creativity and local craftsmanship. For 2026, the City Council has announced four distinct dates, each with a unique theme to keep the community engaged throughout the seasons. Date: Sunday 8th March, Theme: Salisbury Dog Show, Highlights: Competitions for "Perfect Puppy" and "Best in Show," plus expert advice from local vets and trainers. Date: Sunday 10th May, Theme: Arts & Games, Highlights: A celebration of local artists and interactive gaming fun for all ages. Date: Sunday 12th July, Theme: Sports Day, Highlights: Community sports activities and fitness-themed stalls to get everyone moving. Date: Sunday 13th September, Theme: Salisbury Talent Show, Highlights: Showcasing the best of local performers, from musicians to magicians. The first event on March 8th is a must-visit for pet owners. The Salisbury Dog Show, held in association with Salisbury Dog Trainers, will feature various competition categories, including "Golden Oldie" and "Best Rescue Dog." It is a fantastic day out for furry friends and their humans alike.
New Initiatives: Car-Free Days and Community SpacesIn a forward-looking move, Salisbury City Council recently approved a budget that includes a £40,000 investment for up to three car-free days in the city centre during the 2026/27 period. While the exact dates are yet to be confirmed, the initiative aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, encouraging residents and visitors to explore our historic streets without the noise and congestion of traffic. Suggestions for these days include major events like the Christmas lights switch-on, promising a safer and more festive atmosphere for everyone.
Practical Tips for Local LivingFor those looking to declutter or find a bargain, the popular Car Boot Sundays are back. Starting on February 15th, these sales run every third Sunday of the month through November. It is a great way to support the local circular economy. Sellers can arrive from 6:30 am for a small fee, while buyers can browse for free starting at 8:00 am. Additionally, families should note the Half Term Funfair taking place from February 17th to 22nd in Guildhall Square. With a selection of rides and sweet treats, it provides a perfect local getaway for children during the school break. Salisbury continues to prove its resilience and vibrant community spirit. By supporting our local markets, attending our historic celebrations, and engaging with new city initiatives, we all play a part in making Salisbury a wonderful place to live and work. Keep an eye on the Salisbury City Council and the Salisbury Post for the latest updates on these events and more.
