Do I need ID to vote? Salisbury voters reminded of strict photo ID rules

If you’re planning to vote in an upcoming UK election, one of the most important things to be aware of is the new requirement for photo identification at polling stations.

Do I need ID to vote? Salisbury voters reminded of strict photo ID rules

Since changes introduced under the Elections Act 2022, voters in England must now show an accepted form of photo ID in order to receive a ballot paper when voting in person.

Yes — you now need photo ID

If you are voting at a polling station in Salisbury or anywhere else in England, you must bring valid photo ID with you. Without it, you will not be able to vote on the day.

This rule applies to:

  • UK general elections
  • Local council elections
  • Police and Crime Commissioner elections

What ID is accepted?

You don’t need anything special, many people already have acceptable ID. Common examples include:

  • Passport (UK or certain international passports)
  • Driving licence (including provisional)
  • Blue Badge
  • Older Person’s Bus Pass
  • 60+ Oyster Card or similar concession travel passes
  • PASS photo card (proof of age card)
  • Defence identity card or biometric residence permit

Your ID does not need to be in date, as long as the photo still clearly resembles you.

What if you don’t have ID?

If you don’t have any accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. This is an official document designed specifically for voting purposes.

To get one, you must be registered to vote and apply before the deadline (usually several days before polling day).

Important: Postal votes are different

If you vote by post, you do not need photo ID. The ID requirement only applies when voting in person at a polling station.

Why the change?

The government introduced voter ID rules to reduce the risk of voter impersonation and improve confidence in elections.

However, the change has also sparked debate, with concerns that some voters may be discouraged or unable to vote if they don’t have the correct documents.

If you are voting in Salisbury, the key message is simple:
Don’t forget your photo ID.
