Devizes Road Gas Works in Salisbury Set to Continue Until March 2027
Gas pipe replacement works on Devizes Road and Gas Lane in Salisbury will bring phased road closures and bus disruption until March 2027.
Drivers in Salisbury are being warned to prepare for months of road closures as engineers carry out major gas pipe replacement works along Devizes Road.
The works, which began in October 2026, will take place in stages along sections of Devizes Road and nearby Gas Lane. The project is expected to continue until March 2027, with motorists facing changes to their usual routes during the work.
Gas network operator SGN has arranged the project to replace ageing gas pipes and help prevent future gas leaks. The company has described the work as essential to maintaining the gas network and avoiding more disruptive problems in the future.
The first phase of the project covers the section from the junction with Gas Lane towards the access to shops on Devizes Road, heading in the direction of St Paul's Roundabout. This stage is estimated to last around four weeks.
The second phase will move to the section between the junction of Gas Lane and the junction with Clifton Road, with work expected to take approximately three weeks.
During the third phase, engineers will work along the stretch between Clifton Road and Ashley Road. This stage is also estimated to last around three weeks.
The fourth phase will cover the section from Ashley Road to Kingsland Road, followed by the fifth phase between Kingsland Road and Highfield Road. The fifth stage is expected to take approximately five weeks.
A further phase will involve Gas Lane itself, between its junction with Devizes Road and the junction with Coldharbour Lane. This part of the project is estimated to last around four weeks.
Access arrangements will be in place throughout the project. According to the published plans, only residents who live on the roads affected by the closures will be permitted to drive through the restricted sections. Other motorists will need to follow alternative routes.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still be allowed through the affected areas, although they should take care around the work sites and follow any instructions provided by contractors.
Bus services are also expected to experience disruption while the gas pipes are replaced. Passengers are advised to check their usual services before travelling, particularly if they rely on buses to reach work, school or appointments.
The work is being carried out by I&G Contractors Limited on behalf of SGN. The company has warned that the planned schedule may change as the project progresses.
Residents and road users are encouraged to check SGN's website for the latest information about the works, including any changes to the timetable or traffic arrangements.
With the project expected to continue for several months, drivers travelling through Salisbury may need to allow extra time for journeys and consider alternative routes, particularly during busy periods.
The phased approach means that different sections of the road will be affected at different times, rather than the entire route being closed for the duration of the project.
Motorists, residents and businesses in the area are advised to remain aware of local traffic notices as the work continues towards its expected completion in March 2027.
