Christmas in Salisbury 2026: Events, Markets, Santa's Grotto and Things to Do This Festive Season

Christmas is fast approaching, and Salisbury is preparing to welcome the festive season with a programme of events, Christmas markets, family activities and entertainment throughout November and December.

Whether you are looking for somewhere to take the children, hoping to find unique Christmas presents, or simply want to enjoy the festive atmosphere, there are plenty of reasons to visit Salisbury city centre this Christmas.

Here is a guide to some of the events and activities planned for Salisbury and the surrounding area in 2026, including dates, times and useful information to help you plan ahead.

Christmas Begins in Salisbury – 20 November

Salisbury's festive celebrations officially get underway on Friday, 20 November, with the return of Christmas Begins at Salisbury Market Place.

Running from 1pm until 8.30pm, the free family-friendly event will feature live music, entertainment, festive stalls and food and drink. It offers an opportunity for residents and visitors to come together and enjoy the start of the Christmas season.

Christmas on the Square – 20 November to 31 December

Guildhall Square will once again become a festive meeting place with the return of Christmas on the Square.

The event will run from 20 November until 31 December, featuring festive retail chalets, food vendors, a bar, live music and entertainment on selected dates.

The pop-up will be open from 11am until 10pm, although individual traders will have different opening hours. The retail chalets and Santa's Grotto will operate until 24 December, and the event will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Entry is free, making it an option for anyone wanting to enjoy the festive atmosphere without paying for admission.

Meet Santa at Salisbury's Christmas Grotto

Families with young children can also look forward to meeting Santa at his grotto in Guildhall Square.

The grotto will operate from 20 November until 24 December. Children will have the opportunity to meet Santa, take a family photograph and receive a wrapped gift.

Tickets are advertised at £6 per person, plus an online booking fee. Advance booking is recommended, with booking information and opening times available through Salisbury City Council.

Follow the Salisbury Christmas Trail

If you are looking for a free activity to enjoy with the family, the Salisbury Christmas Trail is worth adding to your plans.

Running from 20 November 2026 until 4 January 2027, the trail will feature decorated installations around the city streets.

Families can collect a trail map from Salisbury Information Centre or Salisbury Cathedral, with a digital version also planned. It is a great opportunity to explore the city centre, discover its decorations and enjoy a festive walk.

Find Santa's Reindeer Around the City

Another activity for families is the Salisbury BID Reindeer Trail, running from 18 November until 24 December.

Santa's reindeer will be hidden in hand-painted window illustrations around the city centre. Visitors can follow a free circular trail, looking for the different reindeer as they explore Salisbury's streets.

Trail maps will be available from Salisbury Information Centre or can be downloaded and printed at home.

Sunday Christmas Markets – 29 November and December

Salisbury Market Place will host four special Sunday Festive Markets in the run-up to Christmas.

The markets are scheduled for 29 November, 6 December, 13 December and 20 December, running from 10am until 4pm.

Visitors will be able to browse stalls featuring locally produced goods, unique gifts, seasonal treats and other items. It is also an opportunity to support independent traders and local businesses while doing some Christmas shopping.

Christmas at Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral will also be hosting a programme of festive activities and services.

One of the highlights is the From Darkness to Light Advent Procession, scheduled for 27, 28 and 29 November. The atmospheric service will see more than 1,000 candles gradually illuminate the Cathedral's medieval interior. Entry is free and no tickets are required.

Other events include festive late-night opening on 10 December, a Christmas Organ Extravaganza on 11 December and Carols by Candlelight on 22 and 23 December.

Christmas Pantomime at Salisbury Playhouse

For families who enjoy theatre, Salisbury Playhouse will be presenting Beauty and the Beast from 28 November 2026 until 10 January 2027.

The production promises a festive family experience featuring music, dancing and colourful costumes. Pantomime is a popular Christmas tradition, offering an opportunity for families to enjoy a special trip to the theatre during the school holidays.

Visitors should check Wiltshire Creative's website for performance times, ticket prices and availability.

Christmas Activities and Shopping in Salisbury

Christmas is also an important opportunity to support independent shops and businesses across Salisbury.

From traditional high-street shops to independent retailers, cafes and restaurants, the city offers plenty of places to find gifts, enjoy a festive meal or meet friends for a seasonal coffee.

Visitors can combine a trip to the Christmas markets with a walk around the historic city centre, helping local businesses during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.

Plan Your Christmas Visit

If you are planning to visit Salisbury during the festive season, it is worth checking event details before travelling. Some activities, particularly Santa's Grotto and theatre performances, may require advance booking.

The Christmas events programme also provides opportunities for local residents to support independent traders, enjoy free family activities and discover what the city has to offer.

With festive markets, illuminated streets, family trails, live entertainment and seasonal performances, Salisbury has plenty planned to help residents and visitors enjoy Christmas 2026.
