MOD launches campaign highlighting hidden dangers in military training areas

The Ministry of Defence has launched a new public awareness campaign urging people to recognise the hidden dangers that can exist inside military training areas across Wiltshire and other parts of the UK.

The campaign challenges members of the public to look closely at seemingly ordinary countryside scenes and identify potential hazards that may not be immediately obvious. The aim is to remind visitors that military training land is not the same as public open countryside, even when it appears quiet or empty.

Training areas on Salisbury Plain and surrounding military estates are regularly used by the Army for live firing exercises, vehicle manoeuvres and other operational training activities. Unexploded ordnance, ammunition fragments, military vehicles and sudden training exercises can pose serious risks to anyone entering restricted areas without permission.

MOD officials say that warning signs, red flags and flashing red lights are used to indicate when dangerous activities are taking place, and the public is being reminded to follow all safety instructions and remain on authorised rights of way.

The campaign comes as large numbers of walkers, cyclists and visitors continue to enjoy the Wiltshire countryside during the summer months. Authorities are particularly concerned that people may underestimate the risks because parts of the military training estate also contain popular walking routes, wildlife habitats and historic sites.

The MOD is encouraging anyone planning to visit areas near Salisbury Plain Training Area to check local access information before travelling and to avoid touching any suspicious objects that could be military debris or unexploded ammunition.

Officials say the message is simple: if you see military warning signs, barriers or signals, take them seriously and leave the area immediately if instructed to do so.

By increasing public awareness of the hidden dangers associated with military training land, the MOD hopes to prevent accidents and ensure that both local residents and visitors can enjoy the countryside safely while essential military training continues.
