GKN Aerospace has delivered a new set of flight-ready wings, fins and control surfaces for the UK’s emerging Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme, strengthening Britain’s efforts to develop advanced autonomous military aircraft.

The components have been supplied for Brontanax, a next-generation uncrewed combat aircraft prototype being developed by BAE Systems as part of the UK’s future air combat strategy.

According to GKN Aerospace, the structures were designed, manufactured and fully integrated using advanced composite materials before being handed over for the next phase of aircraft assembly and testing.

The work was carried out at the company’s Cowes facility on the Isle of Wight, which specialises in lightweight aerospace structures and high-performance composite manufacturing.

Collaborative Combat Aircraft are designed to operate alongside crewed fighter jets, carrying sensors, electronic warfare systems and potentially weapons, while performing missions that would otherwise place pilots at greater risk.

The Brontanax prototype forms part of a wider UK defence effort to develop sovereign uncrewed combat capabilities and support the future Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) involving the UK, Italy and Japan.

Industry experts say the delivery is an important milestone because it demonstrates that key aerodynamic structures for advanced combat aircraft can be produced within the UK’s domestic aerospace supply chain.

Ground testing of the prototype is expected to begin in the coming years, with the aircraft intended to support future RAF operational concepts that combine crewed and autonomous aircraft in the same mission.

GKN Aerospace said the programme showcases the company’s ability to deliver complex military aerospace structures at speed while supporting high-value engineering jobs and defence manufacturing expertise across the UK.

The development is seen as another step towards Britain’s goal of maintaining a strong sovereign defence and aerospace technology base as military aviation increasingly moves towards autonomous and networked combat systems.
