A Swindon Borough Council councillor has been charged with a series of driving offences, including dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and driving without insurance.

Lawrence Davies, 54, of Moredon, is due to appear before Swindon Magistrates' Court on 24 September following an incident reported on Kingsdown Road in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that Mr Davies has been charged with three offences relating to the incident, which was reported to police on 13 April.

Mr Davies was a councillor for Reform UK on Swindon Borough Council.

Reform UK confirmed that he was suspended from the party on Wednesday.

However, Mr Davies told the BBC that he had already resigned from the party before the suspension was announced.

A Reform UK spokesperson said the party had suspended Councillor Lawrence Davies from its group and subsequently from the Reform UK Swindon Councillor Group.

The case will now proceed through the courts, with Mr Davies expected to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court next month.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and anyone charged with an offence is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
