Wiltshire DVSA check stops van overloaded by nearly two tonnes

A routine DVSA enforcement check in Wiltshire has uncovered a seriously overloaded vehicle weighing almost two tonnes over the legal limit.

Inspectors found the van was carrying 1,950kg more than permitted, putting it 55% over the 3,500kg maximum authorised weight for the vehicle.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency said the vehicle was immediately issued with a prohibition notice, preventing it from continuing its journey until the problem was resolved. A court deposit was also taken from the driver.

Officers then removed the load and carried out a second weigh-in, but the vehicle was still found to be overweight even when unloaded. Because it remained above its legal operating weight, recovery arrangements had to be made.

DVSA warned that overloading vehicles can have serious consequences, including:

• Increased braking distances
• Greater risk of tyre failure
• Damage to suspension and steering components
• Reduced vehicle stability
• Higher risk of serious road traffic collisions

The agency regularly carries out roadside checks across Wiltshire and the wider South West to target unsafe commercial vehicles and protect other road users.

Drivers and operators are being reminded to ensure vehicles are correctly loaded and within their permitted weight limits before travelling, as breaches can result in fines, court action, penalty points and vehicles being taken off the road.

DVSA said the case highlights the importance of proper vehicle maintenance and weight management, particularly for vans operating close to their maximum authorised mass.
