Amesbury and Bulford councillor collects seven bags of litter in just one day during roadside clean-up

Wiltshire Unitary Councillor Kevin Asplin has collected seven bags of litter in a single day after raising concerns about the amount of rubbish that has become increasingly visible along the roadside between Amesbury and Bulford.

Cllr Asplin, who represents Amesbury East and Bulford, said the problem had become particularly noticeable after the grass along the roadside was cut, exposing cans, packaging and other discarded rubbish that had previously been hidden.

With the litter becoming increasingly obvious to people travelling through the area, Cllr Asplin asked whether residents should simply wait for the area to be dealt with or whether local people could come together and help clear it.

Rather than simply raising the issue, the councillor decided to get involved himself and has spent several days picking up litter along the route.

During his latest four-hour session, he collected enough rubbish to fill seven compost bags.

The work has been taking place along the road through Bulford village, continuing over Telegraph Hill towards the Ratfyn roundabout.

Cllr Asplin shared details of his latest litter-picking session publicly, thanking motorists who gave him plenty of room while he was working alongside the road. He also apologised to any drivers who may have experienced a short delay.

Among the rubbish collected were a large number of cans, with Cllr Asplin hoping some of the material could be put to further use by the local Men's Shed.

After seeing how much rubbish had been exposed following the grass cutting, Cllr Asplin decided that rather than simply wait for the problem to be dealt with, he would make a start himself and encouraged others to get involved.

His efforts over several days have now cleared a significant stretch of the roadside, highlighting how much waste can accumulate along a busy local route.

Cllr Asplin continues to encourage local residents to work together to keep their surroundings clean and make a visible difference within the community.
