Older drivers have admitted feeling “extremely nervous” about using cashless car parks, with concerns that they could be hit with unexpected parking charges or become victims of scams.

The move towards cashless parking has left some motorists worried about how they will pay for their parking, particularly when payment machines are replaced by mobile apps or other digital systems.

For older drivers who are less confident using smartphones, the process can be confusing and stressful. Some have raised concerns about being unable to complete a payment correctly and then receiving a parking charge.

There are also fears that criminals could take advantage of cashless parking systems by placing fake QR codes on machines or signs. These codes can direct drivers to fraudulent websites designed to collect personal or payment information.

Motorists are being advised to check parking signs carefully and make sure they are using the official payment system provided by the car park operator.

Drivers who experience problems paying should keep evidence of the issue, including photographs of faulty machines, screenshots of payment attempts and any receipts or confirmation messages.

The concerns have led to calls for parking operators to provide clearer instructions and ensure that people who do not use smartphones are not unfairly disadvantaged.
