Argentina handed automatic place at 2030 World Cup as FIFA letter emerges

Argentina are set to feature at the 2030 FIFA World Cup after reports revealed the country has been granted an automatic place as one of the tournament's host nations.

A leaked FIFA letter has reportedly confirmed that Argentina will take part in the expanded tournament without needing to qualify, alongside fellow South American hosts Uruguay and Paraguay, who will each stage one opening match before the competition moves to its main hosts in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The decision follows FIFA's unique plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930. As part of the centenary celebrations, the opening fixtures will be played in South America before the tournament continues across Europe and Africa.

The move means Argentina, the reigning world champions, are expected to receive one of the guaranteed host nation places, allowing them to focus on preparing for the tournament rather than going through the traditional South American qualifying campaign.

The 2030 World Cup will be the first in history to be staged across three continents and six countries, making it one of the largest and most ambitious sporting events ever organised.

While FIFA has yet to publish the final qualification format for all confederations, the host nations are expected to qualify automatically, leaving fewer places available through the normal qualification process.
