England suffer defeat to South Africa in Nations Championship opener

England's Nations Championship campaign got off to a disappointing start after they were beaten by world champions South Africa in a hard-fought encounter that exposed the visitors' missed opportunities.

Despite a determined display, England were unable to match the Springboks' physicality and clinical finishing, with South Africa pulling away in the closing stages to secure victory in front of their home supporters.

England started brightly and stayed in contention for much of the first half, but handling errors and missed chances proved costly against a South African side renowned for punishing mistakes. The Springboks controlled possession through their powerful forward pack and capitalised on key moments to build a decisive advantage.

Head coach Steve Borthwick praised his team's effort but admitted England will need to improve their discipline and execution if they are to challenge the world's top-ranked sides in the remainder of the tournament.

South Africa's dominance at the breakdown and set-piece laid the foundation for the win, while their defence repeatedly denied England opportunities to build sustained attacking pressure. The Springboks also made the most of their kicking game, forcing England deep into their own half for long periods.

England showed glimpses of promise with several well-worked attacking moves and refused to give up until the final whistle, but the hosts' experience ultimately proved the difference.

The defeat leaves England with plenty to work on ahead of their next Nations Championship fixture as they look to bounce back and keep their hopes alive in the competition.

For South Africa, the victory continues their impressive run of form and reinforces their status as one of the favourites to challenge for another major international title.
