Veteran actor Michael Byrne, known for roles in Coronation Street, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones, has died aged 82 following a distinguished career spanning more than 60 years.

Coronation Street and Harry Potter star Michael Byrne dies aged 82

Veteran British actor Michael Byrne, best known for his roles in Coronation Street, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, has died at the age of 82 following a career spanning more than six decades.

Byrne passed away on June 20, although news of his death was announced this week. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Tributes have been paid to the acclaimed stage and screen actor, who was widely admired for his versatility and distinguished performances.

Television audiences will remember Byrne for his role as Ted Page in Coronation Street, where he appeared between 2008 and 2010 as Gail Platt's long-lost father and former partner of Audrey Roberts. The character quickly became a memorable part of the ITV soap.

Film fans knew Byrne for a number of major movie roles, including Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusadeand the older Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Throughout his career he also appeared in films such as Braveheart, Tomorrow Never Dies, A Bridge Too Far and Gangs of New York.

Born in Hampstead, north London, Byrne trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama before joining Laurence Olivier's National Theatre Company at the Old Vic in 1963. He went on to enjoy a celebrated theatre career, performing at leading venues including the Royal Court, Young Vic and in London's West End.

Byrne is survived by his former wife Carole, daughters Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren.
