British households are unlikely to see an immediate reduction in their energy bills despite a sharp fall in global oil and gas prices, according to industry analysts.

Wholesale energy prices have dropped significantly in recent weeks as concerns over supply disruptions in the Middle East have eased and global markets have stabilised. However, experts warn that households are unlikely to benefit from lower prices in the short term because domestic energy bills remain tied to the UK's price cap system and other market factors.

Analysts say the structure of the energy market means reductions in wholesale costs can take months to feed through to consumers. In addition, suppliers often purchase energy in advance, meaning current household bills are based on prices agreed earlier in the year when markets were considerably higher.

Millions of households are already facing higher costs after Ofgem confirmed that the energy price cap will rise from July, increasing the annual bill for a typical household to around £1,862. The increase has sparked renewed calls for government action to reduce energy costs and support struggling families.

Energy experts have urged ministers to accelerate reforms aimed at reducing Britain's reliance on volatile gas markets, including expanding renewable energy generation and changing the way electricity prices are set. Some campaigners argue that decoupling electricity prices from gas could help deliver lower bills over the long term.

While wholesale markets have become less volatile, analysts caution that geopolitical tensions and global demand could still cause prices to rise again, meaning households may continue to face uncertainty over energy costs heading into winter.
