Four men killed after car crashes into lamp-post in Merseyside

Four men have died after a car crashed into a lamp-post in Huyton, Merseyside, in the early hours of Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to Liverpool Road shortly before 02:00 BST after a black Seat Cupra left the road and collided with a lamp-post. Police confirmed that two men aged 23, along with men aged 24 and 26, died at the scene.

A fifth man, aged 27, who was travelling as a passenger in the vehicle, was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.

The car was travelling from Liverpool towards Knowsley when the crash happened. Merseyside Police said investigations are continuing to establish exactly what caused the collision.

Several roads around the area have been closed while officers carry out their enquiries, including Liverpool Road and East Prescot Road. Police said the closures could remain in place over the weekend.

Superintendent Paul Holden from Merseyside Police said the force’s priority was supporting the families of those who lost their lives and finding out how the crash happened.

He appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident, saw the vehicle before the crash or was driving through the area at the time to contact police.

Residents living nearby described hearing a loud bang during the night, with some saying the crash sounded like an explosion. Several people reported hearing emergency helicopters and seeing a large emergency response in the area.

Local residents also raised concerns about road safety, saying there had been previous incidents on the road and calling for improvements to prevent further tragedies.

The crash has left the local community shocked, with police continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
