Residents allowed back home after Tidworth gas leak evacuation

Residents evacuated from their homes after a crash caused a major gas leak in Tidworth have now been allowed to return, although part of the area remains closed to non-residents while emergency work continues.

The incident happened at around 21:00 BST on Thursday when a car struck a gas pressure regulator on Station Road, causing a significant gas leak and prompting a large emergency response involving police, firefighters, gas engineers and Wiltshire Council.

Local resident Jason Naylor said he was in his shed when he heard an "almighty bang" that shook the ground beneath him. He described the sound as being "like something from a Hollywood movie" and said the escaping gas resembled a fountain shooting into the air.

Gas network operator SGN confirmed that around 190 homes lost their gas supply while engineers assessed the damage and carried out safety checks.

Wiltshire Council said it is continuing to work closely with emergency services and specialist teams to ensure the area remains safe while repairs are completed. Residents have been advised to continue following official guidance while the cordon stays in place.

Wiltshire Police said Albert Kweku-Duah, 21, of New Normandy Barracks in Aldershot, has been charged with careless driving and driving without insurance in connection with the incident.

Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash and that no injuries have been reported.

The evacuation caused significant disruption for local residents overnight, with emergency services remaining at the scene for several hours while the damaged gas infrastructure was made safe.

Council leaders have thanked residents for their patience during the incident and said further updates will be provided if there are any changes to access arrangements or the ongoing repair work.
