Four people have been arrested after violent disorder broke out in central London following France's 2-0 World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco, leaving a police officer injured.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Edgware Road on Thursday evening after a large crowd gathered and blocked traffic. The situation escalated when bottles were thrown and fireworks were set off, prompting officers in riot gear to respond.
One police officer was taken to hospital after reportedly being struck on the head with a glass bottle during the disorder. No other injuries have been reported.
Police confirmed four people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. Detectives are now reviewing CCTV footage and videos shared on social media to identify anyone else involved in the incident.
The Met said some of those involved appeared to be wearing Morocco football shirts or wrapped in Moroccan flags. Edgware Road has previously become a popular gathering point for supporters during major international football tournaments.
Westminster City Council leader Paul Swaddle condemned the violence and urged football fans to celebrate responsibly throughout the remainder of the World Cup.
The road was reopened at around 1:00am after the crowd dispersed, while police warned they would continue investigating those responsible for the disorder and attacks on officers.
