At least 12 people have died and 23 others remain missing after a fast-moving wildfire tore through parts of Andalusia in southern Spain, forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes.

The blaze broke out near Los Gallardos in Almería Province before rapidly spreading through woodland surrounding the village of Bédar. Authorities believe the fire may have been triggered by the collapse of a power line, although the exact cause remains under investigation.

Regional president Juanma Moreno described the incident as one of the worst wildfires ever experienced in Andalusia, warning that the death toll could still rise as emergency crews continue searching the affected area.

Officials said several victims were found inside a vehicle after apparently becoming trapped while attempting to escape the flames. Andalusian authorities believe four of those who died may have been British nationals, with the UK Foreign Office working alongside Spanish officials to establish their identities.

More than 1,000 residents have been evacuated, while hundreds of firefighters, military personnel, police officers and emergency responders continue battling the blaze. Water-dropping aircraft and helicopters have been deployed in an effort to contain the fire.

Several people have also been taken to hospital suffering from serious burns and smoke inhalation.

Southern Europe has experienced an intense summer heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 40°C, creating ideal conditions for rapidly spreading wildfires across Spain, Portugal and France.

Spanish authorities have urged residents and visitors to follow evacuation orders, avoid affected areas and remain alert as firefighting operations continue.
