Nigel Farage resigns as MP and triggers Clacton by-election amid finance scrutiny
Nigel Farage has resigned as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election while facing parliamentary scrutiny over financial declarations. He says he will stand again to seek a fresh mandate.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has announced he is resigning as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, triggering a by-election as he seeks a fresh mandate from voters while facing growing scrutiny over his financial affairs.
Farage said he would immediately stand again in the by-election, describing the contest as a battle between "the people and the establishment". He insists he has done nothing wrong and says the investigations into his finances are politically motivated.
The Reform UK leader is currently being investigated by Parliament's standards watchdog over allegations that he failed to declare a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne, along with other financial support reportedly provided by long-time associate George Cottrell. Farage has consistently denied breaking parliamentary rules.
The surprise resignation means voters in Clacton will return to the polls to elect a new MP. Farage, who won the Essex seat in the 2024 General Election with a majority of more than 8,000 votes, says he is confident local residents will back him once again.
Opposition parties have criticised the move, arguing it is an attempt to shift attention away from the ongoing investigations. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have all indicated they intend to contest the by-election.
The parliamentary investigation into Farage's financial declarations is expected to continue regardless of the outcome of the by-election. If re-elected, he would return to Westminster while the standards inquiry remains ongoing.
