Summer Reading Challenge returns to Wiltshire libraries this July
Wiltshire libraries are preparing for another summer of stories as the popular Summer Reading Challenge returns, encouraging children to keep reading throughout the school holidays.
Organised by Wiltshire Libraries, this year’s challenge opens for sign-ups on Thursday 4 July. Families will have a two-week window to register at their local library before the challenge officially begins later in the month.
Aimed at children aged four to eleven, the Summer Reading Challenge is free to join and is designed to keep reading fun and pressure-free over the holidays. Children choose their own books to read, from picture books and comics to non-fiction and novels, andwork through the challenge at their own pace.
This year’s challenge has a creative theme, Read to the Beat, which focuses on creativity and self-expression. Libraries across Wiltshire will be supporting the challenge with themed book displays, activities and reading suggestions.
As children progress, they will collect rewards and certificates, helping to build confidence and a sense of achievement. Library staff say the challenge plays an important role in preventing the “summer reading dip”, when children can lose reading fluencyover the long school break, making the return to school more difficult.
Parents and carers are encouraged to visit their local library from 4 July to sign up and find out what is happening nearby. The challenge also offers families a free, welcoming activity throughout the summer, with libraries providing relaxed spaces to read, browse and take part.
The Summer Reading Challenge will be running at libraries across Wiltshire, including Salisbury Library, Amesbury Library, Wilton Library, Tisbury Library, Devizes Library, Chippenham Library, Trowbridge Library, Melksham Library and Warminster Library.
Further information and local updates will be shared through Salisbury Post and at libraries across the county.
