Wilton Fire Station to remain open as closure plans put on hold
Wilton Fire Station will remain open after revised proposals halted immediate closure plans, although its long-term future still depends on additional government funding.
Wilton Fire Station will remain open for the time being after Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority approved revised proposals that halt the immediate closure of eight retained fire stations.
The decision follows months of public consultation and campaigning by firefighters, residents, local councillors and MPs, who argued that closing rural stations would increase emergency response times and place communities at greater risk.
Under the revised plans, Wilton Fire Station will continue operating while the fire service seeks additional funding from central government. The authority hopes to secure permission to increase the fire service element of council tax to the national average, generating around £2 million a year to support frontline services.
Chief Fire Officer Andy Cole said the improved financial outlook had allowed him to recommend keeping the stations open, adding that any additional funding would enable the service to modernise rather than make further cuts. Investment is expected to focus on firefighters, equipment, vehicles, buildings and technology.
Despite the positive outcome, campaigners say the future of Wilton Fire Station is not yet guaranteed. If the proposed funding arrangements are not approved by early 2027, the option of station closures could return for consideration.
Local campaign groups welcomed the decision but pledged to continue lobbying ministers to ensure the station's long-term future is secured. Wilton Town Council has also reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the station fully operational, saying it will continue to scrutinise any future proposals affecting emergency cover in the area.
The decision offers temporary relief for the community while discussions continue over the long-term funding of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.
